I was in Las Vegas not long ago and I was struck, as I always am, by the triteness of the town. Granted, I was only there for about 14 hours, but the over-the-top plasticity of everything was difficult to digest. I was thinking about when I was there in the 1970’s while attending a convention at the MGM Grand, and I remembered having my photo taken during a dinner with a handful of my clients in the outdoor billboard industry. God, I fit right in: I was wearing polyester for grief’s sake! Just looking at the photo made me think of the line by Kate Winslet’s character Iris in “The Holiday” when Arthur Abbott said to her, “If it’s corny…you don’t have to wear it.” Iris replied, “I’m looking for corny in my life.” Iris would simply love Las Vegas; too bad the film didn’t send her on holiday there!
